You Can Count on This – 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 – For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. (Read 1 Thessalonians 2:1-20)
When I first read these verses this morning I thought about my role as a father (and now a grandfather) and how Paul is laying out for me and all dads/granddads what we are to be doing for our children and grandchildren. Like a father who loves and wants the best for his children, we are to encourage them in their faith in Christ, comfort them when things are hard, and urge them to live their lives in a way that brings glory to God. Encourage, comfort, urge. That’s part of the role of a father.
But it’s also the role of each of us in the church. Not just dads, but all of us should be thinking about how we can encourage one another in our faith, comfort each other when we are hurting, and urge one another to glorify God with our lives. Doesn’t sound too complicated, does it? Encourage, comfort and urge. That’s the role of a Christian.
When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.
