Top Ten - June 8

If you’d like to help out in some area in the church contact Pastor John at john@northgatefmc.com.

If you’re interested in a small group, contact Angelique at angelique@northgatefmc.com.

1.  Playground Construction Logs are rolling in (pun intended) and work on the Adventure Playground at North will be getting underway. The plan is to work on Fridays and Saturdays from 9-12 and anyone interested in helping is welcome. To check on workdays or for more information contact Mark at mark@northgatefmc.com.

2. FLN Youth Theater Housing Need The week of June 26-30 Family Life Network will be holding a youth theater workshop here at Northgate. There are already 35 youth signed up for this event! There will be three leaders coming into town to lead the workshop, and they are in need of housing for that week. If you are able to host one or more of the three, please let Becca, our Kids Ministry Director, know at becca@northgatefmc.com. Please note: due to allergies homes with cats won’t work for this group. Thanks! (And if you’d like to register a youth for the workshop you can do that at familylife.org/events.)

3. Kids Game Night On Saturday June 10 our Northgate Kids Team will be hosting an “end of school celebration” fun night from 5-7pm at our North campus. There will be food and outdoor activities for kids in Kto4 and their potty-trained younger siblings. For more information you can contact Becca at becca@northgatefmc.com.

4. Father’s Day Weekend Father’s Day weekend is coming up and we’re going to once again have ice cream on Saturday night and an ice cream truck on hand on Sunday so you can share an ice cream with your dad. This would be a good weekend to invite someone to join you for one of our worship services!

5. Linked Weekend Focusing on Our Kids We have a special weekend coming up June 17/18 when our Kids Ministry Team will be leading our worship services. Being an “Intergenerational” church is important to us and recognizing and valuing our kids is an important part of that, so on that weekend all Kto4 kids will be joining their families in the sanctuary for a fun-filled, kid focused weekend, which all ages will certainly enjoy!

6. Save the Dates There are some events coming up for which you may want to save the date.

  • Phyllis Sortor – a Free Methodist missionary who survived a kidnapping in Nigeria, will be with us June 21 at 6pm to share about her experience
  • Family Life Network Youth Theater Camp – At Northgate June 26-30
  • Kid’s Summer Camp at Northgate will take place from July 17 to July 21
  • Report on the recent Rwanda missions trip – June 24/25

7. Apple Tree Tags I know – we haven’t even finished this school year and we’re asking you to think ahead to the next one! The Apple Tree is a ministry that is led by the Salvation Army and with which we assist when we take tags from the tree, purchase the necessary school supplies and return them here for delivery to the Salvation Army, which will then distribute them before the next school year begins to children who are in need of some extra assistance. There will also be tags requesting Wal-Mart gift cards for children who are in need of new sneakers for the school year. The tree should be up next weekend, so if you are able to help out, thank you!

8. Habitat for Humanity Workdays We are happy to support the work of Habitat for Humanity in our area - several of our Northgate people regularly work on houses or contribute things that are needed. On July 12 the staff will be taking some time to volunteer labor and on Saturday July 15 we invite members of our congregation to do the same. For more information contact Pastor Chris at chris@northgatefmc.com.

9. Yarn for Prayer Shawl Ministry We have a wonderful prayer shawl ministry led by Rosalina in which people gather once a month to create prayer shawls which are prayed over and given to people who are going through various kinds of struggles.

Right now this group and some additional people are in the process of making 1200 washcloths which will be given to the children of Gahanda, Rwanda. These washcloths are something the kids there really enjoy getting and it’s a joy for us to distribute them! The team is planning to have all 1200 done by the end of July, but they could use some more yarn to finish the project. Particularly, they are looking for “Peaches and Crème” yarn. If that makes sense to you (I’m lost!) and you’d like to donate some you can just bring to the church next time you are here. Thank you!

10. Disc Golf Course The nine-hole disc golf course is open and is getting used steadily! If you don’t have discs but want to give it a try, we do have some discs at the office and you’re welcome to borrow them any time the office is open. Have fun!

You Can Count on This – Colossians 3:12 – Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Read Colossians 3:1-25)

When we entrust our lives to the care of Christ, and receive forgiveness for our sins, the power of the Holy Spirit and new life, we will become different people. Not people who have been “tweaked.” But actually different. New people! We may or may not notice it at first, but that doesn’t make it less true. We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). In Colossians 3:3 Paul puts it this way: “You died.”

That is, our old self has died. The person we were no longer exists. The person we are now is “hidden with Christ in God.” I can’t pretend to know all that that means, but at the very least I think it means that we are securely with Christ. And that what we are becoming is more and more like Christ. And that when God looks at us, He sees us through Christ – holy, pure, loved.

And so as new creations in Christ, whose old self has died off and who have been made new, we are to live out our Christlikeness. We do that by expressing the compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience of Jesus. We may not hit it out of the park in those ways every day, all the time. But as God does His work in us, and we cooperate with His Spirit, we will do so more and more. The new clothes we have put on (compassion, etc.) will become more and more natural for us. Praise God!

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word.  So read what God has to say in scripture!  And count on it.
