Top Ten - November 10

1. Northgate 101 The second session of “Northgate 101” takes place this Sunday, November 13, at 9:30 in meeting room 1. This short-term small group is a place to meet people and learn about the Free Methodist Church and about Northgate. If you’re interested in membership this is a required group, but everyone is welcome to attend whether or not they are planning on membership, and even if you didn’t make session #1 last week. Email Pastor John to sign up - john@northgatefmc.com.

2. Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl ministry meets the first Saturday of every month at 10am at Northgate North. This group makes prayer shawls which are given out to people going through difficult times in their lives. All are welcome to come and join in; if you don’t know how to knit a shawl this is a great place to learn!

3. Suicide Prevention Fundraiser Thank you to everyone who helped with the pulled pork fundraiser this past Tuesday. The proceeds from that will go to help the Mental Health Association in the effort to bring an end to suicide, and to bring hope and healing to those who are hurting.

4. Thanksgiving Baskets We are now collecting monetary donations for Thanksgiving meal baskets that we will be preparing and delivering to local migrant families. If you would like to donate, please designate your gift as “Thanksgiving Baskets” on kindrid or in your memo line.

5. Creation Museum/Ark & Sight and Sound Trips We are planning to take two trips next year. One of those trips would be to Sight and Sound in Lancaster, PA. Next year they’ll be putting on “Moses.” If you’ve never seen one of their live shows, I can tell you that they are spectacular.  The other trip would be to see the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter, both located in Kentucky. These will be wonderful times of fellowship, inspiration, and learning. Quite a few of you have already expressed your interest. If you’d be interested in joining us for either or both of these, please let Angelique know. We are planning to do one in the Spring and the other in the Fall. You can reach Angelique at angelique@northgatefmc.com. Thanks!

6. Monday Night Bible Study This discipleship group has started up again on Monday nights at 6:30pm. We are studying the book of Hebrews together. Everyone is welcome to this study, and you don’t have to be a Bible scholar to come! We’ll grow together, chapter by chapter! For more information contact Pastor Vern at vern@northgatefmc.com.

7. Can We Pray For You? Please let us know how. Email us at prayer@northgatefmc.com. And if you’d like to join one of our several prayer teams (Sunday mornings, Wednesday afternoons, the Care Team) please let us know that too.

8. Mothers & Grandmothers Moms in Prayer International group will begin on October 11 at 6 p.m. at North campus on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month while school is in session. We meet to pray for our school and/or college aged children, their educational successes and needs while they are enrolled in school and the typical challenges that students meet on a daily basis. Moms in Prayer guides, written by founder Fern Nichols, can be ordered, and purchased if desired, however prayer outlines are provided each week. The hour is spent praising God using scripture, silent confession, Thanksgiving for answered prayer and praying for specific needs. You can check out the website for more information (www.MomsinPrayer.org) or contact prayer leader Paula Neumann (585)201-0079.

On Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a prayer team meets in meeting room 4. During this time people pray for the services, needs of our congregation and other topics as God leads.  We would love to have you join this prayer team.

9. Vintage Christmas Planning has begun for our Vintage Christmas celebrations this December, and we’d like to invite you to be part of the team that makes this happen. If you are interested in volunteering for one of the many tasks that need to be done, please contact the church office at office@northgatefmc.com and let us know. We would love to have you!

10. Right Now Media As a church we subscribe to Right Now Media, a web-based video service which offers thousands of videos on all kinds of topics of interest to the Christian community. Included are many Bible studies of various kinds which make leading a family or small group discussion really easy. It’s free for you to use as a Northgate attender, but you do need a password. To get that contact Sherrie in the office at sherrie@northgatefmc.com.

To learn more about these opportunities, or to suggest an idea for a group or a gathering, or to inquire about reserving space at the church or the pavilion you can always email the office (office@northgatefmc.com) or call 343-4011. You can check out our website too (northgatefmc.com).

You Can Count on This – 2 Corinthians 7:10 – Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. (Read 2 Corinthians 7:1-16)

There’s an ocean of difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. Godly sorrow recognizes that when we have done wrong, we have not only hurt ourselves or someone around us, but we have also damaged our relationship with God. Godly sorrow recognizes that there is something wrong in our hearts and that we actually need a heart-transplant, not just to correct our behavior. Godly sorrow leads to repentance - a desire to be a new person, with a new heart and transformed mind. Godly sorrow doesn’t minimize sin, but it takes hope in God’s mercy, forgiveness and promise of new life. Godly sorrow is not sorry for having sin brought out into the open, because through confession and repentance it is possible to experience healing and renewed joy.

Worldly sorrow, the sorrow of being caught in sin but not repentant, or having to deal with the consequences of sin when the hope had been to escape or hide from them, is not healing sorrow. It does not “lead to salvation and leave no regret.” It leads to bitterness and despair, because if it is only worldly it does not seek the mercy, forgiveness and help of God. Don’t be fooled by worldly sorrow. Allow godly sorrow to do its life-changing work.

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word.  So read what God has to say in scripture!  And count on it.
