Top Ten – April 13th

  1. Volunteer Spotlight Let me give a shout out of thanks to all of you who will prepare, serve and clean up after our Easter morning breakfast. I look forward to this every year – it’s part of such a great day: starting with the sunrise service and continuing to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection with the daybreak service and our other services. So many of you help to make this happen, and I want you to know that we are grateful. Bless you!

  1. Gathering Worship NightAll High School age through Adults are encouraged to attend a Wednesday night Gathering Event on April 19th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the North Campus. There will be worship, fellowship and a message by Pastor John!

  1. Summit IIThe Summit is what we call our annual church meeting (some of you will know this as the Society Meeting). This year the Summit will be held on Sunday, April 30th from 12:30 to 2 p.m. We will have childcare for young children and a light lunch for for those who stay after service. The Summit II will be an opportunity to hear about what’s been happening at Northgate, and our vision going forward. We’ll also be holding a short election for Nominating Team members and our Delegate.

  1. Gahanda Mission UpdateOur mission team is getting ready to tell us more about Gahanda the weekend of April 22/23. Please try to be with us that weekend – it’s going to be a wonderful time of worship. And if you were unable to sponsor a child previously because we ran out of packets, there are more packets available at the Information Desk.

  1. International Child Care 2016 HighlightsICCM is about so much more than the 20,736 children being assisted by child sponsorships, as important as they are! ICCM is also about providing water filters (4000 were delivered to Haiti after Hurricane Matthew) and emergency food and survival kits (distributed in places like Cambodia, Myanmar, Haiti and the Philippines). ICCM is also about building schools and training up leaders. Thank you for supporting this work with your prayers and sponsorships.

  1. May is Mental Health Month Jesus showed God’s compassion toward those who struggle with their thoughts and emotions, and so should we. Statistically about 20% of all Americans experience a mental disorder in any given year, and about 50% of all Americans will experience a mental disorder at some point in their lifetime. That includes disorders like panic attacks, depression, PTSD and so on. Let’s be sensitive to those who are affected by these types of disorders and let’s seek God’s guidance as to how we as a church can help.

  1. Habitat for HumanityThis week I’ll be offering a house dedication for a family moving into a home provided them by Habitat. I’m always excited and happy for people who are being blessed in this way, and it reminds me to encourage you to consider being part of a Habitat build day. There is almost always work being done on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and if you’d like to be a part of it, just call Habitat at 345-1656, or

  1. What I’m ReadingThis week I’m re-reading Resilient Ministry. The authors discuss how pastors can take care of themselves, in order to remain effective in ministry. And that’s what I want to do: be an effective Northgate pastor for as long as God lets me be here!

  1. Miracle for GahandaI want to share something wonderful with you! On Monday our Missions Team met and decided to send $1200 to Gahanda to repair a damaged roof on the church, parsonage and office there. They are entering the rainy season and were concerned about how they were going to do this, so we helped! The very next morning, Mark (our church administrator) received an unexpected visit from our insurance agent with a dividend check. How much was it for? $1400. You cannot out give God!

  1. Congratulations Dan!This past weekend we welcomed Dan Calkins as a Local Ministerial Candidate. An LMC is a person who is exploring a potential call from God to enter ministry. If you know Dan, please encourage him as he follows this path of exploration. If you don’t know him, you’ll get opportunities to do so in the months ahead.

You Can Count on This – “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:19-21

I heard a story today about a man who passed away, and when people went into his house to clean it out they discovered piles and piles of paper, most of it worthless junk mail that he’d saved for years. Maybe you’ve heard stories like that. Many people who live this way are struggling with their mind or emotions, and we need to be in prayer for them, but it made me think about how we can so easily place value in things that are of no real value at all. Jesus tells us to be careful about what we treasure. Some “treasures” will turn out to be value-less, others will have value for eternity.

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.
