  1. Habitat for HumanityEvery year we volunteer with Habitat for Humanity by participating in a build day. Northgate’s build day this year is this Saturday, July 22nd. There is information available at the Information Desk. If you’re available, think about coming out to help – it’s for a good cause and it’s a lot of fun too!

  1. Bring and Build and Send (1)Our mission as a church is to bring people to Jesus, build them up in that relationship and send them out to change the world. Stephen and Linny Emanuele are in the midst of discerning God’s will for them regarding being sent to serve as missionaries in Oostende, Belgium. They have spent time exploring this with Rev. Mitch Pierce, the FM Missions Area Director for Eastern Europe. Their next step is an exploratory trip to Belgium this July. Please keep them in prayer as they prepare, and if you’d like to help them with their expenses, please mark the donation accordingly. Thanks!

  1. Bring and Build and Send (2)Another Northgater, Laurie Call, is heading out on a mission trip this summer also. Laurie is a student at Houghton and will be joining classmates on a trip to Nicaragua in August. You can read more about Laurie’s trip on our Facebook page at facebook.com/northgatefmc. Please keep her in prayer as she prepares to serve!

  1. Bring and Build and Send (3)We love to celebrate the good things the people of Northgate are doing! Doug Forsythe is currently riding a bicycle cross country (Portland to NYC) to raise money for an organization that is helping those with Cystic Fibrosis. You can learn more about his ride and who he is supporting at facebook.com/cycling4cf.

  1. Volunteer Opportunities at the Nursing HomePremier Genesee (formerly the Genesee County Nursing Home) is looking for people who can spend some time with their residents; especially those without family members. If you can spend an hour or so reading, playing cards, making crafts and brightening someone’s day, please call Michelle Wilkin at 344-0584.

  1. Help the Salvation Army Distribute School Supplies The Salvation Army has a goal of providing 300 backpacks to area students in need, filled with all the school supplies necessary for the upcoming year. A filled backpack is $25 and donations can be made to the Salvation Army (529 East Main Street, Batavia) or you can bring supplies here and we’ll see that they get over to the S.A. A list of the things they need is available at the Information Desk, or call the S.A. at 343-6284.

  1. Save the Date for the Set Free Conference Northgate will be holding a Set Free conference in partnership with Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church at our North Campus on September 23rd starting at 8:30am and going until noon. This conference will be focused on informing people about the reality of the human trafficking that occurs here in the U.S. and around the world, and in our own state. More information will be coming!

  1. Faith at the FairOn July 18th, from 4-10pm you are invited to attend “An evening of spirit filled music.” Various worship bands from the area will be providing the music, and the admission is free to the fair and the concert (there is a $5 cost per car for parking though).

  1. The “Here and Now Festival” is Coming in August August 25 and 26th to be exact. Anthony and Brothers McClurg will be performing along with other well-known worship bands. There will be food trucks, vendors, a kids stage and more. Karen VanWyngaarden is our Northgate representative to the planning team and if you want more information you can contact her at karenvw@aol.com or get a flyer at the Information Desk.

  1. Thought You Might Like to KnowWe are halfway through 2017 (can you believe it!) and I thought you might like to know that so far this year we have seen 42 people come to faith in Christ through the ministries and people of Northgate (many though Rosalina’s work at the Detention Center). We’ve also baptized 28 people on “This Changes Everything” weekends and brought into our membership 19 people. Thank you, Church, for all of your prayer, financial, verbal and volunteer encouragement and support!

You Can Count on This – When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. Matthew 9:28 (Read Matthew 9:27-34)

Two things jump out at me in this passage. One is that before healing the blind men Jesus asked them to affirm their belief in him. I think this physical healing is meant to point us to the spiritual healing that Jesus offers everyone (he didn’t physically heal everyone, but he does offer everyone new life). To receive that healing we need to believe in him, and in his ability to give it to us. The second thing that jumps out at me is that some people just refuse to celebrate the good things Jesus does! They insist on being negative about them. (Read verse 34). Let’s be those who celebrate and not those who look for reasons to be negative!

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.

  1. Star Spangled 4th At Northgate North – Thank you Kelley, Traci and everyone else who helped put on the July 4th celebration this week. Over 200 people came out for the games, bonfire with S’mores, and fireworks (courtesy of the Batavia Muckdogs!). It was a wonderful way to celebrate our nation’s independence!

  1. What Would You Like To Know? Our current sermon series is focused on what happens to us after we die. On the last weekend of the series we’d like to address your questions on this topic, and you can help us by submitting them via the Northgate App (See the “Life After Life” icon on the opening screen) or by card (cards are available at the Information Desk), or by email (email John or Vern at northgatefmc.com).

  1. Foster Care Families are NeededThere are children in Genesee County who are in need of loving adults to provide foster care or become adoptive parents. Many of you in our congregation have already done so, or are engaged in providing that family home now. Thank you for opening your home to these children! If you are interested in knowing how you can be a part of this, please contact Cheryl Stenger at the Department of Social Services, 344-2580, ext. 6414.

  1. Light and Life MagazineLight and Life is our Free Methodist denomination’s monthly magazine and it’s a good way to learn about what is going on with our leadership and our churches. Look for this month’s edition on a table in the Adult Wing hallway. The June copy is focused on “Planting”, and there’s an article about MOPS in it. MOPS is a ministry we very much appreciate at Northgate!

You Can Count on This – “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.” Matthew 9:16 (Read Matthew 9:14-17)

Jesus came into the world to do a new thing – to offer God’s grace and forgiveness and Spirit to everyone who would receive them through faith in him. Some people wanted to hold onto old things while taking some of the new, and Jesus responds with a teaching that this is not possible. We can’t clutch to what we were and also allow God to make us completely new! Jesus invites us to embrace his offer of a new way of life, centered on him and his love and sacrifice for us. What do you need to let go of, to embrace the new life that Jesus is offering?

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.

  1. Star Spangled 4th At Northgate NorthKelley Switzer is organizing a July 4th “Firework Watching” at Northgate that will include food and fun activities. Our North campus has a pretty good viewing of the fireworks display that follows the Muckdog game, and we are inviting you to come and watch from our parking lot, and bring a friend!

  1. Bring and Build and SendOur mission as a church is to bring people to Jesus, build them up in that relationship and send them out to change the world. Most of the time the “sending” is local: to our families, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, etc. Sometimes people hear God ask them to explore something that takes them further away. Stephen and Linny Emanuele are in the midst of discerning God’s will for them regarding serving as missionaries in Oostende, Belgium. They have spent time exploring this with Rev. Northgate will be holding this conference in partnership with Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church. It will take place at our North Campus on September 23rd starting at 8:30am and going until noon. You Can Count on This – “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” – Matthew 9:13 (Read Matthew 9:9-13)

My initial response to this is relief. Jesus says that he has come to call sinners, not the righteous. I think in this case he’s saying that he isn’t calling those who think they are perfect in righteousness, but he’s calling those who know they’ve fallen short of perfect righteousness. That’s me! By admitting we’ve not lived up to God’s perfect standards, we can be welcomed into God’s family! That’s good news!

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.

  1. “This Changes Everything”This weekend we are planning to baptize or dedicate 16 people from our congregation! This is a wonderful thing and something to celebrate. Every one of these represents a life being changed by the love of Jesus. Let’s make sure we praise God for each one!

  1. Congratulations to Our Bible Trek Kids! In our Bible Trek ministry the kids were challenged to memorize verses from the Bible. Congratulations to those who memorized one or more, and a special “way to go!” to those who memorized all five: Alicyn Rippel, Anna Kent, Grace Keller, Elijah McMillan, and Samuel McMillan. May God bless you for the work you put into learning His word! (And thank you, Leaders, for helping them!)

You Can Count on This – Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone is Israel with such great faith. – Matthew 8:10 (Read Matthew 8:5-13)

Who’s connected to Jesus, and who isn’t? This passage of scripture emphasizes that it is those who have faith in him who are in. Even if they never thought they could be accepted by God. Even if they felt like outsiders and strangers. Even if they come from a long ways away. Even if they feel unworthy. Faith in Jesus is the key to relationship with Jesus.

When you’re not sure what you can count on in the world around you, know this: You can count on God keeping his word. So read what God has to say in scripture! And count on it.
